When a mother parked her SUV next to the Schinkel River in Amsterdam, she was prepared for a day of shopping. As she got out and opened the back door to remove her young child, she was shocked to see her vehicle moving toward the edge of the water. Because she couldn’t get her child out of the car seat in time, she jumped in the back seat as the vehicle plunged over the edge and into the river with both of them inside.

Fortunately, Reuben Abraham heard the screams from his office and looked out the window onto the horrifying scene. He quickly grabbed a hammer from a shelf and ran outside to jump in the freezing January waters to save them. By this time, Reuben was accompanied by three other heroic bystanders who’d also dived into the river.
