Friends Raise $100K for Widower

June 27, 2017

As if losing his wife to a long battle with cancer wasn’t traumatic enough, 80-year-old Kenneth Smith was facing ending up destitute because of medical bills that exceeded $100,000.  After his wife, Helen’s death, Smith returned to selling bags of kindling on the roadside for $5 each to make extra money.  When a local woman discovered the Gulfport, Missouri man’s plight, she contacted family members of his who started an online fundraising campaign.  After just nine days, they had raised $105,000, which was enough to free Smith from the crushing debt and save his home.
