Gavel, a German shepherd, was recruited by the Queensland Police in Australia to be a law enforcement service dog when he was a puppy.
After making it through his academy training, Gavel had one major problem; he was much too friendly to everyone he met, even criminals. Unfortunately, the police dog with a heart of gold had to be fired from the position he’d been groomed for since birth, but as they say, when one door closes, another opens.
When officials at the Queensland governor’s office heard Gavel had been relieved of his duties for such positive reasons, they instantly felt he would be the perfect greeter for their department. Holding the title of Vice-Regal Dog, Gavel’s responsibilities now include greeting visitors to Queensland’s Government House and escorting the governor on official outings. Occasionally, he even sits in on government briefings and looks to have a long career in state government as the perfect ambassador for Queensland.
